Psalms 139:13-16 Rewritten...
Original post from 22 November 2004, rewritten...
13For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother’s womb. 14I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well. 15My frame was not hidden from You, When I was made in secret, And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. 16Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, The days fashioned for me, When as yet there were none of them. (Psalms 139:13-16 NKJV)
Know Your Existence
You are unique! There is only one you. God has made us all different. Doesn't that make you feel special? Besides, just differences in our physical appearance, our thought patterns, behaviour, character, personality are equally different. Two children born within the same family, with the same amount of care and concern plus the same education and yet they are both different. So what makes us unique? What makes us special? In v.13, David beautifully describes how a baby is formed within a mother's womb. How God "covered" him in his mother's womb. To cover, is to protect, to overshadow. God was thinking of you while you were being formed in the womb and He was protecting you and overshadowing you.
William MacDonald wrote, "In a speck of watery material smaller than the dot over an 'i,' all the future characteristics of a child are programmed ? the color of his skin, eyes and hair, the shape of his facial features, the natural abilities he will have. All that the child will be physically and mentally is contained in germ form in that fertilized egg. From it will develop 60 trillion cells, 100 thousand miles of nerve fiber, 60 thousand miles of vessels carrying blood around the body, 250 bones, to say nothing of joints, ligaments and muscles." To illustrate how highly complex protein molecules are: one molecule of hemoglobin, in the blood cell, may have in it 758 atoms of carbon, 1203 of hydrogen, 195 of nitrogen, 3 of sulphur, 1 of iron, and 218 of oxygen, making a total of 2378 atoms. All of the other 100,000 protein molecules are also highly complex and ALL of them are different! Imagine the amount of detail God placed into creating you, YOU ARE INDEED ONE OF A KIND!
God knows you before you were even born. The word "cover" in Hebrew also means to protect, to overshadow. This demonstrates that God has you in His mind from the very beginning, before the world even existed. For God knows every single part of you and everything that there is to know about you. You were here not by accident.
Know Your Purpose
Rick Warren said, "Without a purpose, life is motion without meaning, activity without direction, and events without reason. Without a purpose, life is trivial, petty and pointless". After realising his existence, David's next verse praises God and declares that he is fearfully and wonderfully made. Our beings are to praise God and everything in this world is for His glory. Just as in Romans 11:36 (Living Bible) it says, "Everything comes from God alone. Everything lives by His power, and everything is for His glory." Once we know why we exist, we know what our purpose is. Even our soul knows very well, that is why every person on earth has a yearning desire to find a "god" in their lives. There is an innate sense of wanting to be in His presence. We are here for His pleasure and to give God all the glory. Even before we were formed, just like the "substance", the potter knows how to make a beatiful jar out of unformed clay. Before we even exists, God knows how exactly we would turn out to be.
Know Your Destination
When you know your purpose is to be in God's pleasure and to give God all the glory, we begin to start our journey. Running the race and not looking back. By following God's perfect will, we would then know how our days would unfold before us. How they are fashioned before us.Something to ponder about...Have you thank God lately for your uniqueness. For making you special and for making the people and things around you special? Have you thank God for the air you breathe and for the loved ones around you? Do it today, thank God for something in your life, for you are fearfully and wonderfully made. You are unique!
Take some time now to thank God for making you unique and for creating you. Spend some time to thank God for the loved ones around you.
